Storing Your Will Safely: Digital and Physical Options

By: The FormalWill.ca Editorial Team  |  Reviewed by: Alex Caspian, Legal Researcher

A perfectly written Will is useless if no one can find the original. Executors generally need the original, signed paper copy. For drafting and execution steps, see our Complete Canadian Will Guide.

Physical Storage Options

  • Home safe or fireproof box: secure and accessible—ensure the executor can open it.
  • Safety deposit box: reliable—confirm post-death access requirements with your bank.
  • Lawyer’s/notary’s office: safe but verify long-term access if firms merge or close.
  • Provincial Will registry: available in some provinces to help locate Wills.

Digital Copies (Backups)

Digital copies aren’t generally valid replacements but are useful backups. Store securely (encrypted cloud or drive) and limit access to trusted people—your executor, spouse/partner, or lawyer.

What Your Executor Needs

  • Exact location of the original Will
  • Access instructions (keys, passcodes)
  • Location of Powers of Attorney
  • An asset/liability summary or checklist

Review Schedule

Every 2–3 years, confirm the Will’s location is secure and accessible. If you move or change storage, inform your executor immediately.

Protect your plan from day one. Create your Free Canadian Will or explore Premium Will Plus, then store the original safely. For execution rules, see the Signing & Witnessing guide and the Complete Canadian Will Guide.
